What I liked

Team-focused work. Great culture. Learned a ton!!

What I wish was different

My work involved a lot of self-guided teaching to be able to complete my projects. I’d like to have had a more comprehensive training prior to the start of my projects.

Advice

If you don’t know something, ask your teammembers/fellow interns! Everyone at APS is very helpful.

Engineer intern

May - August 2016 • Tonopah, AZ

What I liked

This internship did exactly what engineering internships should be designed to do which is to give an introduction to the engineering industry and leave the intern with some expertise before returning to complete their studies. I felt I received the right amount of coaching to be successful wherever I ended up and a positive outlook on my future career.

What I wish was different

I think that there should have been more side tasks to occupy interns aside from their main assignment/project. There was too much downtime and I was sometimes bored which can be annoying on a 10 hr shift.

Advice

See as much as you can while you are there and Google things that you don't understand. This will help you immensely in your final years at school and put you ahead in the industry you end up working in.

Accounting Intern

May - August 2019 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

Everyone was so kind and always willing to answer questions and teach. Everyone enjoyed their job and the company is very supportive of people moving around to different departments to learn more about the company. The internship was also a rotational program, so I was able to go through 4 different departments and see more of the accounting department. There were also plenty of intern programming events, so I was provided with several opportunities to network and meet other interns! I also had a summer long intern project, so if tasks were ever slow in the rotation I was in, I always had my project to work on on the side.

What I wish was different

There is not much I wish would have been different except I would have liked to maybe only go through 3 rotations, so I could spend even more time in each of my rotations rather than hit more sections of the department.

Advice

Don't try to prepare for the internship. There is no way to prepare for going into the electric utility industry because it is so complicated. With this being said, always be willing to learn, be comfortable asking questions and admitting you don't know how to do something. Everyone that works there knows how complicated the industry is, but the only way you can understand the accounting is to understand a lot of how operations work, so you have to keep an open-mind.

What I liked

The company is very employee-centric and open with how the interview process will progress. The recruiters at the job fair take the time to answer all of your questions and are specific with their own job experiences. It has some of the most competitive pay and benefits. The training process has also been lovely with plenty of opportunities to learn more and a variety of information.

What I wish was different

The interview process is long and will require you to travel to Phoenix.

Advice

Be prepared for plent if STAR questions and accept that the best programs are competitive. Work hard and put your best foot forward to fully capture all the opportunities.

I loved how personal everyone was. It was really interesting to rotate through 4 different departments. This helped me decide what I was passionate about. I was also able to have 1:1 meetings with higher up management on career goals.

Accounting Intern

May - August 2017 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to network with professionals all over the company. This accounting internship was a rotational program in which I was able to learn about different sectors of the business, while performing day-to-day work.

What I wish was different

Although I loved the program, the rotations were a little bit too short. I would have really enjoyed to spend more time in each department!

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Everyone at APS is so willing to help you learn and understand the business. The more you question, the more you will learn and the more you will grow from the experience!

Human Resources Intern

January - August 2017 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

This was truly an amazing experience. The university recruiter has created a holistic experience for the interns that work there, providing programming in social events, executive speakers, tours, networking events, and personal/professional development opportunities. Never have I felt so strongly that a company values their employees--I know without a doubt that everyone at APS regardless or rank or title is regarded as an important and valuable member of the team. Additionally, many of the projects (including my own) encourage cross-department partnerships, and this in turn helps show how the work that you do relates outside your business unit and ultimately to the main goal of the company.

What I liked

The opportunity to learn from a variety of individuals and gain experience in utility accounting.

What I wish was different

I can't think of anything that I wish had been different. I loved my summer experience!

Advice

Remember to go into an internship ready to learn. It's an entirely new experience coming from school so being able to use your critical thinking skills and articulate your strengths and weaknesses is important.
